Terri McKnight, CPA, director of the Audit Department in the firm of Gelman, Rosenberg & Freedman in Bethesda, Md., has more than 14 years' accounting experience in both the public and private sectors, including more than four years with large national CPA firms. Her focus since joining the firm has been auditing and consulting for nonprofit organizations.
Mrs. McKnight's responsibilities include managing all phases of audit engagements for nonprofit organizations including private voluntary organizations with federal funding, member-based associations and other charitable institutions. In this capacity, she is responsible for the planning, budgeting and directing of audits of large organizations and interacting with management and board members to communicate management comments, audit findings and specific issues, including improvements in accounting and operating systems and systems of internal control. As a member of the firm's international team, she frequently travels abroad to perform field office audits and provide management consulting to our international clients.
Mrs. McKnight also spent two years as a controller in the private sector. In that capacity, she developed hands-on experience in developing and implementing accounting and internal control procedures, preparing budgets and financial forecasts and consulting on investment decisions and employee benefit plans. Her corporate experience, combined with 12 years in public accounting, has given her a broad understanding of financial management issues from both perspectives.
Mrs. McKnight earned her bachelor's degree in accounting at Christopher Newport College in Virginia. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. She currently serves as chairman of the Audit Committee of the Bush Hill Elementary PTA.
