Michael A. Freedman, CPA, is a director/shareholder in the firm of Gelman, Rosenberg & Freedman in Bethesda, Md. He is the former director of the firm's Audit Department. Freedman has more than 30 years experience in public accounting, which includes over 12 years with KPMG (formerly Peat Marwick). During his career, he has specialized in auditing and accounting for nonprofit organizations.

Freedman's expertise includes structuring of nonprofit organizations, internal control evaluation, government compliance auditing and financial management consulting. He consults with nonprofit organizations on issues such as tax implications of international grant programs and taxation of payments to foreign-based workers. Many of Freedman's clients are humanitarian organizations with programs that span the world.

In addition to developing his technical expertise, Freedman has been involved in nonprofit management and remains active in other areas in the nonprofit community. Because of his reputation for knowledge of best practices in nonprofit management, he serves as a judge for the Washington Council of Agencies/Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management.

Freedman is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Greater Washington Society of CPAs. He is currently a member of the American Society of Association Executives and the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives. Freedman has written and presented seminars on the reporting requirements covered under FASBs 116 and 117, strategic planning, changes in fund-raising regulations, IRS rules on lobbying and documentation of charitable gifts and the allowability of grant expenses. He is a founding board member of Leadership Montgomery and currently serves as treasurer of the Washington Council of Agencies and the Potomac Conservancy. He is also the former treasurer of the Green Acres School.
